Having a Mysterious Encounter in New York...
Out, out, brief candle!
Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more.

Hugo Teugels (TVP services Video Art Production)
wins Awards in the Accolade Global Film Competition, the Best Shorts Competition, at the Hollywood International Moving Pictures, IndieFest film Awards, and the L.A. Neo Noir Film Festival.
Heverlee, Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium, August 2016 – Hugo Teugels, TVP services Video Art Productions, has won a prestigious Award of Merit from The Accolade Global Film Competition, as well as an Award of Merit and an Award of Recognition (-> Leading Actress student) in the Best Shorts Competition 2016. He also received an Award Foreign Short Student from The Hollywood International Moving Pictures FF of L.A., and an Award of Recognition from the IndieFest Film Awards. ‘The Queen’ also won a Silver Award at the L.A. Neo Noir Film Festival.
At the Martial Con Film Festival L.A., U.S. and at the Best Short Fest, Ontario, Canada, ‘The Queen’ made it to the Semi-Finals of the Official Selections.
Asia:
• World Award of Merit at the World Film Awards 2016 Film Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia, and
• Gold Award for Directing & Editing at the Documentary & ShortInternational Movie Award Film Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia
• Special Festival Mention at the 5th Bangalore Shorts Film Festival in
Bangalore, India
The award was for Hugo Teugels’ suspenseful / high-tension short film, "The QUEEN".
The QUEEN features a special and mysterious ‘film noir’ story line about the struggle between life and death, symbolized by the black Queen chasing the white Queen. This is shown in daily flashes from New York City, where the girl lives, with many references to castles (skyscrapers), knights (horses), the Church with the cross of the King, bishops (runners), who keep on running, and of course pawns, represented by the hundreds of bollards along the streets in NYC.
Starring Jessica Roth (Switzerland) and Evi Stamatiou (Greece), ‘The Queen’ was shot in New York City, based on a project-idea of 5 NYFA students (Sara, Daria, Jessica, Evi, and Hugo) (New York Film Academy, New York City, Directors' & Actors' Class - August 2015).
A mysterious encounter in Manhattan unveils that something is not right... A girl meets herself while playing chess at night in a New York City park. This short film asks the question “What if you would meet that one person who can make you realise something is not right..? Or very wrong? Would you believe it?”, and was selected more than 30 times worldwide and has won 13 awards so far.
U.S. screenings will start in Los Angeles in September, and the director will be present at the AOF and The Martial Con Film Festival in Monrovia, L.A., CA. ‘The Queen’ has received 3 nominations for each festival.
The nominations for Best Sound Design & Score (MartialCon) are the result of an education built up over the years and an evolution of the director, who, as an ex-radio presenter of a 90s-film program based on soundtracks, experienced the importance of sound in movies and tried to transfer this to his listeners. He successfully concluded the 2 extra years (on top of 5 regular years) in Digital Imaging @ Art Academy with his project "The Influence of sound", with a storyline (someone is followed by herself...) serving as the basis for this short.
The two promising actresses, the Amsterdam-based Swiss Jessi Roth and the London-based Greek Evi Stamatiou, gave the best of themselves during the shoot in New York city the last week of August of that hot Summer of 2015.
The story and the plot twist are a direct result of the love of the director/writer for inspiring movies such as The Sixth Sense, Inception, Vanilla Sky, and the atmosphere in The Others and the Dark Knight.
Originally, the music of James Newton Howard was used (The Dark Knight, The Sixth Sense, and The Happening). It was a real challenge to replace this score and to edit the film in such a way the atmosphere didn’t get lost...(Nomination for Best Editing & Best Visual Effects in a Short – AOF Film Festival)
The Cinematography (Nomination Best Cinematography - Martial Con FF) grew out the photography background of the director and his passion for still images and sound, which turned into a passion for moving images andfilmmaking.
Director Hugo Teugels :
“I Learned to look at the world in a different way and then try to put this in my movies, big or small.”
“I am happy when people want to watch it a second time to find out or check the clues and symbolic values. That’s what I did with ‘The Sixth Sense’ and many other films...
AND ... people, be careful when using a pedestrian crossing!”
The nomination for ‘Best experimental Project’ (AOF Film Festival) is a precious gift, given the last years’ evolution of this project.

INDVUE VIDEO REVIEW "THE QUEEN" (New York)
* ‘InDvue’, Episode 6, New York Review on Vimeo, April 2017 :
"It’s amazing what a short film can present and especially when there is no real dialogue".
"I did enjoy there was no dialogue in the film, which at first I was kind of incomprehensive about, because I wasn’t sure I would be able to understand the whole story, but really through the music, and through the acting and the visuals I totally understood what was going on." "You’re led Into the mood, into the emotion, you’re not so much paying attention by hearing, it’s the FEEL that you get from The Queen”.
November 2017
* BELIFF – ‘Be Epic!’ Film Fest LONDON :
"The short film "The Queen" is a truly intriguing one.
There is a strong experimental approach for the exploration of Death and Life/ Survival
(battle with oneself) theme through image and sound.
The choice of no dialogue is fitted with the abstract feel of the short."
